AltaSeads Conservancy is working to establish ex-situ macroalgae germplasm banks, analogous to terrestrial seed banks, that are critical to maintaining the natural biodiversity necessary for optimized managed adaptation and restoration.

AltaSeads Conservancy actively works to develop scientific principles, technology, and resources for sustainable restoration and management of macroalgal beds and kelp forests.

Beyond its mission to develop sound scientific knowledge underpinning the ecological, genetic, and social principles of macroalgae conservation, AltaSeads Conservancy works to create a strong and effective education program to disseminate sound scientific principles within an accountable and equitable learning environment.

Finally, it is the core mission of AltaSeads Conservancy to “future-proof” wild macroalgal ecosystems from the potentially deleterious effects of anthropogenic activity, increased extreme climate events, and potentially commercial-scale mariculture activity.

We strive to disseminate our science and collaborate with regulatory agencies to ensure well-informed, managed adaptation and restoration efforts while actively supporting the efforts of breeding companies, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.

We work hand-in-hand with our fiscal sponsor and collaborator AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles.

The Giant Kelp Cluster

We organize monthly meetings of researchers, practitioners, policy makers and dive into hot topics of aquaculture, breeding, restoration, and such.

“The future of our planet depends upon saving as much biodiversity as possible. AltaSeads is playing a vital role in the conservation and future restoration of Eastern Pacific kelp species.”
